Attractive atmosphere under a large sky

Restaurant in the Netherlands now features a large shading system from markilux

In the summer of 2020, the "Harbour Club" restaurant in The Hague decided to make part of its outdoor restaurant usable all year round by building a conservatory. The glass extension was covered with a large-scale awning system from the manufacturer markilux. Managing Director Pieter Smit is very satisfied after the first eighteen months because his guests have since enjoyed not only the great view but also the wonderful atmosphere under the awnings.

The "Bink 36 " is at the heart of the Binckhorst in The Hague. The historic building is the address for creative types, start-ups and technology companies in the city. Its top floor is home to the "Harbour Club" restaurant, which can accommodate 400 guest, offering its guests an impressive view of the city. And, since 2020, that's something that has been able to be enjoyed all year round in the conservatory. As a final touch for this highlight, Managing Director Pieter Smit decided to have the glass construction shaded by a large-format awning system from markilux.

Awnings give warm light
"We decided on the conservatory awning markilux 8800 because, first of all, it is a high quality product and, secondly, the model is particularly resistant to the wind. Up to force six on the Beaufort scale. We're on the fifth floor here and so we are more exposed to the wind," says Mr Smit. That is especially true as the conservatory extends over almost 30 metres on the entire south-eastern side of the restaurant building. The shading system of the same width consists of three coupled awning fields. To ensure a good cover fit, it is equipped with the tracfix system from markilux and extends a good distance above the glass roof. This in turn means the system provides maximum protection from the sun. "The awnings are in use just about every day. Not just to protect the large glass surface from the sun and heat, but also because they create a wonderful atmosphere. In terms of colour, they fit in with the interior design and generate a warm, pleasant light. And our guests appreciate that," explains a satisfied Mr Smit. Atmosphere, he says, is good for business. The investment in sun protection has thus paid off.

Challenging installation project
The summer before last, a crane was used to transport the components to the top floor. Peer Cornelssen, Head of International Sales, explains that constructions at this height are always more of a challenge logistically speaking. But because the conservatory has a folding glass wall that can be opened, it was easy to transport the packages upstairs and store them temporarily. Five fitters from a specialist local partner set up the system together with the Technical Customer Service of the awning manufacturer in the Netherlands. The system is equipped with a radio-controlled io motor with which the individual awning panels can be controlled separately, making daily use at the "Harbour Club" easy and convenient. "We view every project which, like this reference project in The Hague, contributes to fulfilling the customers' desires, as a success story, andenhances our portfolio of international references," says a satisfied Peer Cornelssen.
