For example, in September 2017, the FDA approved Agios’ and Celgene’s enasidenib for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), validating metabolism-modulating drugs as a means of killing cancer cells. Enasidenib (formerly AG-221) is a first-in-class inhibitor of mutated isocitrate dehydro genase 2 (IDH2). Another instance, in August 2020, Tyme Technologies, Inc. a biotechnology company developing cancer metabolism-based therapies (CMBTs™) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted the company Orphan Drug Designation for its lead pipeline candidate, SM-88 (racemetyrosine), as a treatment for patients with pancreatic cancer.
