Corporate mobility management - responsibility and perspectives for a sustainable future

Seestermühe / Hamburg, 17 October 2024 - In a rapidly changing working world characterized by urbanization, digitalization and the pursuit of sustainability, corporate mobility management plays a key role. FM-Connect.com Network GmbH is setting new standards to support companies in making the mobility of their employees and business partners both more environmentally friendly and more efficient. In doing so, it is important to take a comprehensive approach to mobility strategies - from responsibility towards the environment to improving the living environment, especially in urban areas.

Mobility management as a holistic approach

Today, corporate mobility management faces the challenge of integrating a wide range of mobility options. Companies not only have to include traditional cars in their fleet strategy, but also electric and autonomous vehicles, bike and e-cargobike solutions, e-scooters, shuttle services and messenger and courier services. The development of innovative mobility concepts goes hand in hand with the increasing networking of means of transport and the rising demands of climate targets. This also includes the promotion of shared mobility and car-sharing models to counteract space requirements, congestion, emissions and accident rates.

Responsibility towards the environment and one's own employees is a key aspect of corporate mobility management. Companies have a duty to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through optimized mobility solutions. Not only measures to reduce the CO2 footprint play a role here, but also the promotion of more sustainable usage behavior.

The triple strategy: avoid, shift, improve

The principle of "avoid, relocate, improve" offers a tried and tested approach. Avoiding unnecessary journeys and using home office solutions reduce the need for daily commuting. Shifting to environmentally friendly means of transport such as bikes, e-cargo bikes, company bikes or public transport - for example through the HVV climate ticket - promotes sustainable employee mobility. Finally, it is important to improve existing mobility solutions through technical innovations such as electric vehicle fleets.

Parking space management and parking fees are also decisive levers for optimizing the mobility flow. Today, companies often offer a free choice of parking spaces or even bundled allocation to ensure a fairer distribution and more efficient use of existing resources.

Multimodal mobility and MaaS (Mobility-as-a-Service)

The integration of different modes of transportation and the provision of multimodal approaches are key elements of modern mobility strategies. Companies are increasingly relying on mobility apps that link car sharing, bus and rail connections, e-scooters, cabs and bicycles. The aim is to make mobility options flexible and easily accessible as required. The viability of MaaS (Mobility-as-a-Service) offers a forward-looking approach to providing mobility as a service that is gaining in importance globally. In the coming years, autonomous vehicles and self-driving shuttle services will open up further options for making mobility efficient and environmentally friendly.

Mobility as part of the corporate strategy

Corporate mobility management is closely linked to organizational development. Companies that plan their mobility strategies with a holistic approach not only achieve ecological benefits, but also increase employee satisfaction and improve their position on the market. Compliance with regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol is becoming increasingly important. Compliance and stakeholder participation are essential prerequisites for the success of a mobility concept.

An innovative mobility concept not only offers advantages for the company itself, but also contributes to the development of entire neighborhoods. Neighborhood development and mobility in everyday life are closely interlinked today. Setting up a mobility hub with services such as car sharing, bike leasing or e-scooter stations not only promotes company mobility, but also public life.

Interview with Kay Meyer: Sustainability and mobility in the context of real estate development

In an interview with Kay Meyer, Managing Director of FM-Connect.com Network GmbH, it became clear that mobility management is closely linked to operational sustainability goals and real estate development. "We don't see mobility in isolation, but as an integral part of our real estate projects. The planning of mobility concepts plays a central role, especially in neighborhood development, such as the Bergstedt WohnQuartier project that we manage," explains Meyer.

The real estate development of the future will be strongly influenced by sustainable mobility strategies. "Our vision is to create living and working quarters that not only offer a high quality of life, but also optimize commuting and daily traffic. By integrating car-sharing models, e-charging stations, company-owned bicycles and bike services directly into the infrastructure, we are promoting sustainable mobility directly on site," Meyer continues.

When asked about the company's sustainability goals in the context of mobility, Meyer emphasizes: "The focus is clearly on reducing CO2 emissions and supporting our employees in switching to sustainable means of transport. Company bike leasing, the expansion of e-cargo bikes and the use of shuttle services for employees who live in rural areas and don't have good connections are key components of our strategy."

Meyer emphasizes the importance of integrating mobility as a service into existing business models. "We actively support our customers in implementing mobility concepts that are tailored to their specific requirements. Especially in times of a shortage of skilled workers, it is crucial to also offer mobility services that make it easier for employees to travel to work and promote their health."

The future of corporate mobility

The implementation of future-oriented mobility management requires a high degree of planning and foresight. Companies need to create clear groundwork and framework conditions in order to develop their mobility concepts. A decision matrix and a decision template help to take into account the complex requirements of an integrated mobility concept. Aspects such as the calculation of costs, the framework conditions for suppliers and the integration of a charging service provider are crucial for successfully shaping the mobility transition.

FM-Connect.com Network GmbH is continuously working on new projects and visions that pave the way for successful and sustainable mobility in the future. "The mobility of the future is autonomous, electric, connected and shared. Companies that prepare for this now will remain successful and competitive in the long term," says Kay Meyer, Managing Director of FM-Connect.com. "We see mobility not just as a challenge, but as an opportunity to improve operational and social mobility holistically."
