Dr. Mehraj is leading initiatives such as first of their kind workshops in Digital Surgery and Artificial Intelligence AI in his state of Kashmir in India that will improve availability, accessibility and affordable healthcare.
The idea for this webinar and panel discussion arose from an article written by Moderator Robert Sundelius who describes singularity in physics and math, meaning infinite value, and in the general sense to mean small changes leading to large effects, then draws parallels, connecting to the concept of "Mega Projects" such as building places of worship or large public works projects, massive historical projects once taking decades or even centuries to complete and finally suggesting this as a potential new approach to solving larger, serious pains in healthcare.
The panel spoke from a position of real-life experiences having been directly involved in delivering healthcare for decades. Moderator Mr. Sundelius, conjectured about how doctors might begin to play the crucial roles of leader, what skills and mindsets they might need to begin solving their own pains, and embracing, rather than resisting, healthcare singularity by playing a critically important role within this concept of a new digital mega project, and finally how they might leverage emerging technologies to do it all in just a fraction of the time it would have previously taken.
The webinar opened with a reception and a truly inspiring video presentation created by TAMP team, on the "Mega Project" l'Arc de Triomphe Wrapped which was an art installation by late artists Christo in Paris. The 49.5-metre-tall Arc de Triomphe monument was been covered by 25,000 square meters of silvery fabric, secured by 3,000 meters of contrasting red rope. The project fulfilled a "life-long dream" of partners Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who were best known for wrapping famous buildings around the world.
After the video TAMP CEO David A. Hall welcomed all doctor attendees and opened. Next, Moderator Mr. Robert Sundelius Introduced the theme and panel discussion process
After which, panelists shared their own personal experiences and insights gained from working in their own diverse areas of the world and proposed concrete ideas of what has worked for them and how these same strategies might enable doctors to take the lead within healthcare singularity and mega projects.
Dr. Brennan Spiegel shared his innovative journey about how he was able to start and lead a department, create global Extended Reality events and design solutions, and the significant impact he and Cedar Sinai are having and how this might fit into the development of the proposed global Mega Project. Dr. Spiegel conveyed the importance of healthcare professionals obtaining digital skillsets and establishing best practices such as the use, application and payment models of wearable biosensors, medical extended reality XR, smart phones and smart phone applications, electronic health records EHR informatics, datasets and even the role of social media as an epidemiological database as a form of intervening and engaging with patients ". Dr. Spiegel emphasized that "clinicians can access the Cedar Sinai Accelerator where they can work with innovators in technology" and noted that these are "some examples of how they are working to operationalize digital health".
Dr. Naoko Okada told the story of her experiences and challenges of bringing in multiple stakeholders to work together in synarchy in a hierarchical organization. Dr. Okada asserts that "assessing and analyzing the pros and cons of various stakeholders are vitally important", continuing on to explain that "establishing priorities of those closest or at the most import level, then executing a clear strategy" is the key to success.
Dr. Asif Mehraj described his inspiring story about how he is building a sustainable ecosystem in India that will be part of the global mega project. Dr. Mehraj told of the current situation in his country of India where they have "both conventional and high tech" and how there was a need to "bring together not just surgeons discussing medical approaches as they commonly do, but also diverse groups including non-medical engineers, data scientists, innovators and others to solve problems". Dr. Mehraj declared that with his workshops he "wanted to begin by with new mindsets, do what the future is asking us to do and stay up to date with what is going on around the world".
In response to another panel question posed by Moderator Robert Sundelius on the types of digital skills that doctors were received, Dr. Okada admitted that there is a "huge skill gaps" and they doctors are now "seeing patients come in that are very well verse in digital health technologies such as wearables and even asking how they might share their health data with their doctor". Dr. Okada stressed that "doctors needed to ensure they were enabled with digital health skills in order to be able to properly advise patients on the need, availability, and proper use of digital health technologies". Dr. Spiegel agreed and added that "people spend 99% of their time away from the 4 walls of a hospital, where their illnesses evolve, biopsycho social experiences occur and this is where we can reach out and monitor people remotely and to do this we need a new kind of doctor, a digitalist" and "through remote patient monitoring centers we can "hotspot" patients that might be getting into difficulty by finding a signal in all the noise such as lab data and psycho metric data (how people are feeling)". Dr. Mehraj was also in agreement with the panel declaring that "doctors must be digitally literate; it was now a must have and being driven by patient demand".
Moderator Robert Sundelius accurately summarized the panel consensus that "doctor digital skills have become crucial and are being driven by patients" continuing on to point out the "importance of the physician-patient relationship, to use and leverage technology to deepen understanding of the patients we serve, to build trust with the patients we serve, to do great good through digital health technology and platforms".
