Erfan Nouraee: The young inventor on a mission

Erfan Nouraee, a 21-year-old inventor from Toronto, Ontario, has won the Global Innovator Challenge - and a prize - for a discovery that could make high-speed internet more accessible and affordable.

More than 4 billion people, mostly in developing countries, still don't have access to the internet.

That inspired Nouraee to invent a fiber-optic communication sensor that can detect the particles of light, and it solves a major issue in the optical fibre industry.

The young scientist, who was an invited guest of the Economic Club of Canada to meet with President Obama as a youth leader delegate, is now working to bring his invention to market. 

At just 15 years old, Nouraee invented a remarkable number of mind-blowing tools. From a portable device that detects the liberation of electrons from metal plates caused by light to a device that reduces the noise-to-signal ratio in fiber-optic communication, Nouraee is no stranger to using science and engineering for global good. More recently, he has developed a digital mental health care platform named iMind, which uses artificial intelligence technology to normalize youth mental health discussions and fight the stigmas.
The Innovator Challenge aims to recognize and reward inventions in all areas of science, technology and engineering. The competition was open to inventors around the world.

About Erfan Nouraee

Erfan Nouraee is an Iranian inventor, global speaker, and aspiring author. He is known for his award-winning invention of a method to detect the liberation of electrons released metal surfaces and to increase the quality of light signals that won the Global Innovation Award. As a high school student, he won the 2016 Khwarizmi Youth Award. Since 2020, he has attended York University as an undergraduate.
