Honey Imports
In 2017, approx. 655K tonnes of honey were imported worldwide; surging by 15% against the previous year level. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017, when imports increased by 15% against the previous year level. In that year, honey imports attained its maximum volume, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, honey imports totaled $2.3B in 2017. Overall, honey imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. Over the period under review, honey imports attained its maximum level of $2.3B in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Honey Imports By Country

In 2017, the U.S. (176K tonnes), distantly followed by Germany (81K tonnes), the UK (46K tonnes), Japan (43K tonnes), France (35K tonnes), and Spain (32K tonnes) were the key importers of honey, together achieving 63% of total imports. Belgium (26K tonnes), Poland (26K tonnes), Italy (23K tonnes), the Netherlands (16K tonnes), and Saudi Arabia (12K tonnes) took the minor share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, average annual rates of growth with regard to honey imports into the U.S. stood at +5.2%. At the same time, Poland (+23.3%), Belgium (+11.7%), Spain (+10.6%), Italy (+8.1%), the Netherlands (+6.0%), the UK (+4.1%), France (+4.1%), Saudi Arabia (+2.8%), and Japan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest growing importer in the world, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2007-2017. By contrast, Germany (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (2%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while France, Italy, the UK, Belgium, Spain, Poland, and the U.S. saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -1.9%, -2.3%, -2.7%, -3.1%, -3.4%, and -10.8% from 2007 to 2017, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the U.S. ($569M) constitutes the largest market for imported honey worldwide, making up 25% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($282M), with the share of 12% of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with the share of 6%.

In the U.S., honey imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.5% over the period from 2007-2017. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+3.9% per year) and Japan (+7.9% per year).

Honey Import Prices By Country

The average honey import price stood at $3,515 per tonne in 2017, falling by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017 it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when import price increased by 27% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average import price for honey reached its maximum level of $3,740 per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was Saudi Arabia ($5,094 per tonne), while Poland ($2,101 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by the U.S. (+6.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
