India needs 4 lakh organ transplants every year

The demand for the continuous need for organ transplants has always been higher than its supply. Dr. Sandeep Attawar, president of the Indian Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (INSHLT), stated during a two-day conference of INSHLT that "India needs four lakh organ transplants annually." Even with this demand for organ transplants, in India, only up to 1000 transplants are being made possible. This decrease in the number is a lack of organ donors for the very cause. According to Dr. Attawar, only around 0.5 percent of the organ donated are from diseased organ donation, mainly after terminal brain death. With this massive increase in the need for organ transplants, Transplant organizations like 'Transplants-Foundation' can benefit those in need.

The conference conducted by INSHLT was led by around 350 medical professionals who participated in providing awareness about critical medical fields of heart and lung transplantation. The meeting also addressed mechanical circulatory support with a thrust on the path-breaking advancements that happened and made possible in recent years. The whole aim of the association is to create a place to educate the population of India about being volunteers and coming forward to achieve a noble cause together.

India has seen a steep decline in organ donations in the last couple of years. But on the other hand, the pandemic resulted in an increase in organ donations compared to the previous years. In 2021, organ donation numbers were closer to the highest than in the last five years. These organ donations are primarily the result of deceased donations. However, despite this increased rate, the need for organ donors in India is still much more than we can imagine.
