ISAAA Holds Webinar on Global Impact of GM Crops
PG Economics reports that crop biotechnology continues to boost farmer income, contribute to food security, and reduce environmental impact of agriculture since the first genetically modified (GM) crop was commercialized in 1996.
In the upcoming ISAAA Webinar on July 15, 8PM (GMT+8), Graham Brookes, one of the co-authors of the report and Director of PG Economics, will share the highlights of their report on the economic and environmental benefits of GM crops from 1996 to 2018, particularly the following:
• agricultural environmental impact;
• return on investment for the farmers using the technology; and
• contribution to global food security.
Brookes is an expert in agricultural economics, with more than 30 years’ experience of examining economic issues relating to the agricultural and food sectors. He is a specialist in analyzing the impact of technology, policy changes, and regulatory impact.His work includes frequent updates of a global economic and environmental impact of GM crops report, the impact of insect resistant maize in Spain and herbicide tolerant soybeans in Romania, the impact of GMO labeling and ‘GMO avoidance’ in Europe, the economic impact of GMO zero tolerance legislation in the EU, the cost to the UK economy of failure to embrace agricultural biotechnology, the economic impact of bio-safety legislation in Turkey, and studies of the potential impact of using crop biotechnology in Ukraine, Russia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
The report is co-authored by Peter Barfoot, also one of the Directors of PG Economics. The webinar is hosted by ISAAA SEAsiaCenter. It will be moderated by Dr. Rhodora R. Aldemita, Director of ISAAA SEAsiaCenter and Global Knowledge Center on Crop Biotechnology.
