MBBS Seats Will Increase Now as the Lok Sabha Cleared the NMC Bill
29th July, Monday.
Lok Sabha on Monday 29th July has passed the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill which states the replacement of the unscrupulous MCI with another body, which would mark an end to the inspector raj in the medical education sector as described by the government.
The bill that attempts to oppose the Indian Medical Council Act 1956, was passed by a voice vote amid a walkout of the opposition congress, DMK and Trinamool Congress.
The bill also has the privilege of making the national standards in medical education, uniform by proposing the final year MBBS exam to be considered as an entrance exam for PG and a screening test for students who are foreign graduates in medicine.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said, National Medical Commission (NMC) should focus on the outcome rather than the procedure. The exam National Exit Test (NEXT) will ensure that the proposed National Medical Commission will no longer have a system of repeated inspection of infrastructure in the medical colleges.
The opposition members are against some provisions such as the exit examination and the replacement of elected members with the nominated members in the proposed commission. The legislation is against federalism, is accused by the opposition.
The Congress leader Manish Tiwari in a debate said “The cure is worse than the disease.” He also mentioned that the bill would end up legalising capitation fee in future.
On the contrary to that Vardhan refused to the allegations and said that there is zero personal interest. This bill will benefit in stopping inspector raj and help increase the number of seats in medical colleges. NMC will be unbiased and efficient said Vardhan in reply.
