Top 10 Tips for Successful Tree Planting This Season

Top 10 Tips for Successful Tree Planting This Season

Bare root season is a prime opportunity for landscapers and garden professionals to establish healthy, thriving trees while maximising efficiency and budget. Running from November to March, this is when trees are dormant, making them easier to handle, transport, and plant. With insights from A.S. Gardens and Landscaping, here are 10 tips to make the most of bare root season.

1. Source from Trusted Nurseries

Quality stock is crucial for successful planting. We partner with reputable suppliers like Griffin Nurseries, Creepers Nursery, and Hillier, who provide robust and healthy bare-root plants, ensuring they arrive in top condition for your projects.

2. Handle with Care

Bare root plants are especially prone to drying out compared to potted plants. To protect them, keep the roots damp and covered during transport and while on-site. Use moist hessian, plastic sheeting, or similar materials to shield the roots from wind and sun exposure. If the plant comes in a hessian sack, always plant it directly in the sack without removing it, as it will naturally decompose and protect the roots during establishment.

3. Plant Promptly

Aim to plant bare root trees as soon as possible after delivery. If immediate planting isn't feasible, heel them into the ground temporarily or store them in a cool, dark place with the roots kept moist.

4. Prepare the Ground Thoroughly

Make sure the planting site is fully prepared before your plants arrive. Start by digging a hole that is twice the width of the root spread, and loosen the soil at the base to encourage healthy root growth. Avoid compacted or waterlogged soil, as this can severely hinder root development. If the site is compacted, consider using a specialist soil-breaking attachment or manually digging over a larger area than needed. Adding topsoil or compost can also help improve soil structure.
For wet or poorly drained areas, additional drainage may be necessary. Adding grit or gravel to the bottom of the hole can help prevent waterlogging. Also, avoid planting too deeply - ensure the tree or plant sits at the correct depth to support proper growth. Taking these steps to improve soil and drainage will give your plants the best start and ensure they thrive.

5. Position Roots Correctly

Spread the roots out naturally in the planting hole, avoiding clumping or bending. The root collar (where the roots meet the trunk) should sit at ground level for optimal growth and stability.

6. Stake for Support

Newly planted bare root trees need support to withstand wind and prevent root disturbance. Use a sturdy stake and soft tree ties, ensuring the tree can still move slightly to encourage strong root development.

7. Water Wisely

While dormant trees don't require excessive watering, they still need adequate moisture to establish roots. Water thoroughly after planting and monitor soil moisture levels during dry spells.

8. Mulch for Protection

Apply a 5-10cm layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. This helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.

9. Plan for Seasonal Projects

Bare root season aligns perfectly with planning large-scale planting schemes. Whether creating hedgerows or designing avenue planting, bulk-buying bare-root stock allows for greater flexibility and cost efficiency.

10. Partner with Experts

For complex planting projects, work with experienced landscapers like A.S. Gardens and Landscaping. Our team provides tailored advice, skilled planting, and access to high-quality stock from reputable nurseries.

Bare root planting is not only budget-friendly but also one of the most sustainable and effective ways to establish trees. By following these tips and partnering with top-tier nurseries, you can deliver exceptional results for your clients this season.
